Celebrating 35 years of porn innovation 1976 – 2011
Has it really been 35 years this week since ro89’s debut? Why, it seems like just a few months. But it’s true–we’ve been wasting computer power on organizing porn since April, 1976, when CPU speed was measured in picohertz and most of the pornstars had bush down there.
Here is a short history of ro89:
1976 – ro89 on IBM Portable PC 5100
one of the first portable computers – finally people could use it in the bathroom or even in the car to watch some quality porno.
1977 – Runnin on the Commodore PET
featured a cassette recorder and player, it allowd you to finally save that monochrome porno picture with granny on young action
1981 - Apple III
Finally, the users could print the porno pictures on the nice printer.
1983 Apple Lisa
Finally one could store half a color picture on the twin floppy drives of this very expensive piece of hardware. If you had to store and render the full picture you had to use two Apple Lisas … it was common for two friends to bring their computers together to render the porno, this lead to akword conversations.
1984 Apple Macintosh
One of the biggest innovation of 1984 allows users to open two black and white porno pictures simultaneous, this opens the door to new possibilities … … … …
1993 Running on Mosaic – first web browser
We had one of the shortest urls for that period and the site loaded from a HD sony floppy disk.
1999 Nokia 7110 – first wap enabled phone
This phone, not only appeared in the matrix movie, it was also the first one to have WAP features and access to WAP porno sites.

Downtime
Sorry about the recent downtime, I had a lot of problems with the localized versions of the site and with the main database – it keeps hanging after it runs a lot of queries that seem to not end :).
comming soon:

- a monitoring system that will restart the database when it detects problems :|. I know it’s not an ideal solution but I hope it will work.

yourfilehost problems
in the last weeks yourfilehost.com had some big problems and now it seems that all the videos are not working.
If they don’t come back online in 1 week I will remove all the videos from them.
According to a statemen from livevideo.com a site owned by the same people: http://livevideo.com/ – someone stole the servers :)
xvideos.com is down
xvideos.com one of the biggest adult tube site on the planet is down since yesterday. It appears that the company that hosted it – Reality Check Network – had it’s servers attacked by a former employee.
We now have a lot of inactive links to xvideos.com, in 24 hrs I will remove all the links because I doubt that they can recover the clips even if they get back online.

UPDATE 10/05/2010 – the bookmark system is back on!
We are working to fix and improve ro89.com:
- the bookmark system is broken – due to spammers
- new translations - sorry that I was unable to reply to the people who submitted new translations, ro89 is my second project now.
- I already have a new interface almost ready for the site but it needs some testing.

Update 03 Oct 2010
After implementing the sort by date feature we had a lot of downtime due to the low amount of ram on the main server. We moved the main site to a server that has 8GB of RAM and I hope that will solve most of the problems cause by the crawlers when we updated the index with new videos. From now on we will try to update the site faster (at least hourly).

Update – 22 July 2010
I had moved the site on new servers and on a way better network, the new system still had some downtime and problems but now it seems that the site is fixed and works ok.
In the last 2 days I’m slowly moving the thumbnails, all 1 million of them, to another server with better specs and with a ssd instead of a hard drive. I’m hoping that would solve the issues that the site had with the very slow images and thumbs in the past 10 months.
I also tested a vewrsion 2 of ro89 inspired by bing, you can check the first page here.
After I finish with the thumbnails, I will start to work on the two most talked about features that are missing: better auto complete and sort by date.

Update
- I’ve fixed the multi language search again – it was failing to translate most of the queries
- fix the crawler to actually crawl every day :). It seems that it was not working for a long time
- I’m now checking the sort by date feature, a lot of people reported that it doesn’t work
- Improvement: we now have a lot of suggestions to almost every query – I will load them to the main db in 2-3 days
- I’ve clean up the database and removed almost 20000 dead videos, it seems that the clean up crawler didn’t work for 3 months.
Thanks a lot for your visits and I hope you enjoy the site as much as I enjoyed building it and maintain it for the past 3 years :). For now on I will try to keep it cleaner and make sure that it works – we had a lot of down time in the past – sorry for that.

Check out this crazy screenshots!
Ro89 is not dead :), between my new startup and giving up cigarettes I managed to find some time for some HUGE and unique improvements. The new engine will literally understand the words, it will know when you are looking for a pornstar, movie, modeling girl etc… and it will try to deploy the best algorithm for your search… It will be one of the very first semantic porn search engine.
The first step was to make the engine understand the words and automatically learn from the data that I have. With time it will get better at this and IT WILL predict what you’re looking for.
Here is the new word separation algorithm that gets about 80% precision :) I will roll it out to the servers as soon as the current site is stable… The site still has problems.
